Best time for the Watzmann: when the hut and the Hocheck are realistic
The Watzmann lies in Berchtesgaden National Park. The Hocheck summit is 2,651 m high and the Watzmannhaus hut sits at 1,930 m. When you can go depends on two things: is the hut open, and is there still snow higher up? This guide sets out what the official sources say, month by month. As of October 2026.
In short
According to berchtesgaden.de, the hut is usually open from mid or late May to early or mid October, depending on the weather. For 2027, berchtesgaden.de gives 22 May to 4 October 2027.
For the traverse, Bergwelten names roughly July to September as the most reliable window in stable weather. But Bergwelten also says that in the end what counts is the reported condition on the day of your tour, not the calendar. The same goes for the Hocheck.
Month by month
| Month | What to expect |
|---|---|
| May | According to berchtesgaden.de, the Watzmannhaus opens in mid to late May; in 2027 on 22 May. Expect old snow on the path (see June). |
| June | According to Bergwelten, old snowfields on the approach to the Hocheck can hide the path into June. |
| July and August | High summer, the most reliable window according to Bergwelten. At the same time, the DAV says thunderstorm risk is especially high between May and August. |
| September | Still within the window Bergwelten gives. |
| October | The hut closes in early to mid October. In 2026 the last date was 8 October, according to the DAV; for 2027, berchtesgaden.de plans 4 October. |
| November to April | The Watzmannhaus is closed. In winter the avalanche bulletin applies (see below). |
Old snow in early summer
It can already be summer in the valley while there is still snow higher up. Bergwelten writes that old snowfields on the approach to the Hocheck can hide the path into June. In snowy years, Bergwelten says, individual patches of snow or ice are possible later too, especially near the Südspitze.
An accident in early April 2024 showed how dangerous steep snow is. According to Salzburg24, a group of three slid across a snowfield while descending from the Südspitze. A 20-year-old fell about 300 metres and died.
If you have no experience on steep snow, an early date is not a good date for you. Ask about current conditions before your trip (see below).
Snow even in high summer
The Watzmann is high enough for wintry spells in the middle of summer. The DAV writes that snowfall and icy wind are possible even in high summer. And on its Watzmann page: when the weather changes, you should expect snow even in summer.
What this means for you:
- Warm spare clothing, a hat, gloves and rain gear belong in your rucksack, even in August.
- After a cold front, the rock higher up can be wet, icy or snow-covered. According to the DAV, the traverse should only be done on rock free of snow and ice. For the Hocheck, that means: if the rock is wet, snowy or icy, you are better off staying at the hut.
Everything that belongs in your rucksack is in the packing list for the Zugspitze and Watzmann.
Thunderstorms: start early, summit early
The DAV writes that thunderstorm risk is especially high between May and August. There is a strong tendency towards afternoon heat storms, and the risk rises over the course of the day. So the DAV advises:
- start as early as possible
- as a rule, reach the summit by early midday
- in a thunderstorm, leave summits, exposed ridges and secured paths straight away
This matters especially on the Watzmann. The DAV says that if a thunderstorm or bad weather threatens at the Hocheck, you should on no account continue along the exposed Watzmann ridge. The DAV describes approaching thunderstorms as a danger to life.
With a night at the Watzmannhaus, you are already at 1,930 m in the morning. From the hut to the Hocheck, the DAV allows 2 to 3 hours. That way you can be at the top early and back at the hut before the clouds build. Whether the Hocheck suits you is covered in Watzmann for beginners: why the Hocheck is the realistic goal.
Weekends, school holidays and booking
The DAV puts it like this: it does get busy on the Watzmann, but only on certain days, at certain times and in certain places. Weekends and holidays are the busiest.
What that means for you:
- Book early. The Watzmannhaus can only be booked online. According to the Munich section, reservations for 2027 open in mid-December 2026.
- Go on a weekday if you are flexible.
- Cancel if you cannot come. This is online only, using the link in your confirmation.
How booking works and what a night costs is covered in Watzmannhaus: overnight stay, booking, prices and tips.
Autumn and winter
In autumn the days get shorter. The DAV advises planning your return so that you still have time in reserve before dark.
From mid-October the Watzmannhaus is closed. The DAV asks you to look out for winter route signs on all approaches below the Watzmannhaus. The national park says you must always check the avalanche bulletin in winter. The Lawinenwarndienst Bayern (Bavarian avalanche warning service) publishes it daily in winter; there are no daily bulletins in summer.
Where to check current conditions
- DAV Bergwetter: according to the DAV, the region “Bayerische Alpen Ost, Österreich Nord” covers Berchtesgaden National Park and the Watzmann. Since May 2026 it shows a table with values such as freezing level, wind and a thunderstorm probability from 0 to 3.
- Alpine Auskunft Berchtesgaden: advisers answer questions on weather, paths and route choice. According to berchtesgaden.de, from April to October, Monday to Friday, 4pm to 6pm, on +49 8652 9764615. For 2027 the page gives 22 April to 17 October 2027.
- Watzmannhaus conditions page: the Munich section posts current conditions online while the hut is open.
- Berchtesgaden National Park: the page “Begehbarkeit der Wege” has notes on paths and closures in the national park.
In an emergency, call 112. According to the DAV there is not always mobile signal, for example on the descent from the Südspitze to the Wimbachgrieshütte.
The Watzmann preparation pack gives you the weather rules as a checklist for the evening before and the morning, along with the two-day plan with the Watzmannhaus.
