When the hut is open

The 2026 season is over. The DAV lists the Watzmannhaus in its summer closing dates as open “until 8 October”.

For 2027, the tourism site berchtesgaden.de gives 22 May to 4 October 2027. As a general rule it says mid or late May to early or mid October, depending on the weather. According to the section, the hut phone (+49 8652 964222) is staffed from mid May to mid October.

Check the hut’s latest information before your trip.

How to book

  • Online only. The Munich section writes that overnight stays can only be booked online. The link to the booking portal is on the hut page.
  • From mid December. According to the section, bookings for 2027 open online from mid December 2026.
  • Book early. berchtesgaden.de strongly advises booking early. The DAV mentions weekends and school holidays in particular.
  • Changes and cancellations. These are online only too, using the link in your confirmation.
  • Groups. Groups of 15 or more cannot book online. Email the section instead.

If you cannot come, cancel early. The hut puts it plainly: someone who does not turn up may also have had an accident.

Prices

The Munich section has published a hut tariff valid from January 2027. Prices are per person per night, shown here for adults:

Bed DAV member Non-member
Dormitory €18 €35
Shared room €30 €49
Double room €44 €66

As of October 2026. Check the prices before you book.

A few notes:

  • Children, young people and juniors pay lower rates. The age bands differ for members and non-members. The exact figures are in the tariff.
  • You must show your membership card at check-in. Otherwise you pay the non-member rate. According to the section, you can also join on site.
  • Members get a cheaper “mountaineer’s meal” (Bergsteigeressen), capped at €11.

Three things people often forget

Cash. The hut asks you to bring enough cash, as card payment is not possible there. You book online, but on site you pay in cash.

Water. Water is scarce at the hut. The section asks guests to bring as much of their own water as possible. There is currently a surcharge for refilling bottles and for hot water for tea. There is only one washroom for everyone.

Hut sleeping bag liner. It is compulsory and must be cotton or silk. The hut also lists hut shoes with a firm sole, a head torch and rubbish bags. You carry your rubbish back down to the valley.

Quiet time at the hut starts at 10 pm.

How to get to the Watzmannhaus

There are several approaches. The figures are those given on the official sites for the ascent:

Start Ascent Walking time
Wimbachbrücke (Ramsau) approx. 1,267 m approx. 4 hrs
Hammerstiel (Schönau a. Königssee) approx. 1,137 m approx. 4.5 hrs
St. Bartholomä (boat across the Königssee) approx. 1,359 m approx. 4.5 hrs

The DAV brochure gives 1,290 m and 3.5 to 4 hours for the route from Wimbachbrücke. So the figures vary slightly between sources.

For the routes from Ramsau and Hammerstiel, berchtesgaden.de says both are straightforward but need stamina and some mountain experience. According to the section, children aged 10 and over can manage the walk to the hut if they take it slowly. The upper third is steeper. The route from St. Bartholomä uses the Rinnkendlsteig, which berchtesgaden.de describes as steep and exposed in places.

By bus. Bus 846 runs from Berchtesgaden to Wimbachbrücke. To reach the Hammerstiel car park, walk about 25 minutes (1.4 km, 120 m ascent) from the Kramerlehen stop in Schönau.

By car. At the Wimbachbrücke car park, the machines take coins (no change given), debit cards, the Parkster app, Google Pay and Apple Pay. Tickets are available for up to 7 days. At the Hammerstiel car park, 24 hours cost €6. You can park there for several days: up to 3 days at the machine and up to 14 days with Parkster. Sleeping in your car is not allowed. As of October 2026.

Beyond the Watzmannhaus

From the hut you can climb the Hocheck the next day. According to the DAV, that is 736 m of ascent over 2.2 km, about 2 to 3 hours. The path is a waymarked high-alpine route with fixed cables at one point. You need to be sure-footed and have a head for heights. Whether the Hocheck suits you, and why the traverse is a different tour altogether, is covered in Watzmann for beginners: why the Hocheck is the realistic goal.

In an emergency, call 112. Do not count on mobile signal everywhere. According to the DAV, for example, there is no mobile network on the descent from the Südspitze to the Wimbachgrieshütte.

If you are planning the tour with an overnight stay, the Watzmann preparation pack already has the two-day plan with the Watzmannhaus worked out. That way you can make a well-prepared decision about whether and when to go.
